History

Betul is one of the marginally located southern districts of Madhya Pradesh, lying almost wholly on the Satpura. It occupies nearly the whole width of the satpura range between the valley of the narmada on the north and the bearer plains on the south. It forms the southernmost part of the Bhopal Division. The District extends between 21-22 and 22-24 degrees North Latitude and between 77-10 and 78-33 degrees East Longitude and forms a compact shape, almost a square with slight projection on the East and the West. Two small enclaves of the district, viz., Batla blocks of the Govt. forests lie to the West between the districts of Nimar (East) and Amaraoti. These enclaves lie on the Northern bank of the Tapti. They extent from West to East between the Meridians 77-59 and 77-02.

Boundaries

The district derives its name from the small town of Betul Bazar about 5 km south of Badnur, the Headquarters of the district. During the Maratha regime also, in the beginning of the British rule, Betul or Betul Bazar was the district Headquarters. In 1822 the District Headquarters was shifted to the present place, then only the village came to be known as Badnur Dhana, meaning Badnur village in the local dialect. Now, even after such a long time, not only the district retains the old name, but the name of the new Headquarters town, Badnur, as also been superimposed by “BETUL”.

Muktagiri

Bhimkund is a  natural blue water tank. It is  here in the nearby lake where Bheem was believed to have taken a bath after having defeated Keechaka and thus the name. The locals say that the lake is too deep to be measured.

Multai is a town and a Nagar Palika in Betul district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Multai is one of the southern cities of Madhya Pradesh, occupying almost half of the Satpura plateau. The Tapti River

'Tapti' also spelled as 'Tapi' is one of the major rivers in India. The total length of the Tapi river is approximately 724 km. It flows in the central parts of India. The river originates from Multai in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh in the Satpura range at an elevation of 752 meter above the sea level. The states through which the Tapi river flows include MaharashtraGujarat and Madhya Pradesh. History

Sarni is located in part of the Gondwana tract after the Gond tribe, who chiefly inhabited in this area and practiced shifting cultivation.[citation needed]

In the fourteenth and fifteenth century, this area of Gonds was infiltrated by Rajputs and who, by the time of Mughals, had succeeded in reclaiming several parts of the Narmada valley for agriculture. The Gonds were pushed to higher plateaus and slopes to continue hunting and their shifting cultivation. This area saw unrest due to the tension between the Marathas and the Mughals during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. During the year 1818, the area saw the advent of British rule.[citation needed]

Sarni is located approximately 200 km (120 mi) south of capital Bhopal and approximately 225 km (140 mi) north of Nagpur. Sarni is accessible by both road and rail routes. Sarni is home to the second largest power plant in MP, contributing to approximately 8.85% of total electricity generation from Madhya Pradesh.its total capacity is 1330 megawatts {Satpura II (200+210 MW), Satpura III (2x210 MW),Satpura IV (2x250 MW)} . The upcoming project of 660 MW will also begin in 2019.
