The central government on Thursday released guidelines for social media, OTT platforms and digital news. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that if any wrong content is put on social media, it will have to be removed within 24 hours. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said about OTT and digital news portals that they should have a system to control themselves.
These rules are definitely the right steps in the right direction, but we will have to wait a bit for what is actually said. It has to be studied, so that we can understand what the effect will be. The initiative is good, but it still seems that in 2021 these rules reflect the 2011 mentality. The 2011 rules said that the content should be removed in 36 hours. The same guideline comes in 2021, while the ground reality has changed completely. The ground reality is that today the 36-hour timeline does not matter. Suppose someone is defaming you, then he will continue to defame you for 36 hours. Will keep harming your reputations. After that, even if that content is removed, it has no justification.
